Paper Pieced Planner Paperclip

Updated: Apr 20, 2019

Hello crafty friends!!! It's spring, the birds are chirping, and the bees are buzzing what better way to enjoy this time than by crafting a bit and making some super cute and fun paper pieced paperclips. Lately I have been using, or should I say have been a little obsessed with the "Our Friendship Grows" stamp set from Lawn Fawn; so I thought this stamp set would make the cutest paperclip. As per usual I will link the supplies I used at the end of the page. So, without a further a do let's get into how to make these cutie pies.

To start off these paper clips you will need some patterned paper; any kind will work even some scraps you might have just make sure your image fits. Today I am using some of the "Perfectly Plaid Chill Petite" paper from Lawn Fawn that I received as a free-be with one of my purchases. This paper is a 6x6 which makes it a bit easier to work with, in my opinion. I Then took my stamp set and some black ink in this case I used some Versafine Onyx Black pigment ink. Then, I mounted the largest flower from my stamp set on to an acrylic block, inked up my stamp and stamped it onto my paper. Once I finished my stamping I took my heat to to dry the ink a bit faster. You could also prep your paper to heat emboss with an anti-static tool before you stamp your image; by using a pigment ink you have a little time to sprinkle some clear embossing powder over the image and heat setting it. I did this on one of my flowers.

Once I finished my stamping and embossing I took the coordinating dies and die cut the flowers out. I also took a small circle die to die cut the middle of the flower so that I could use a different piece of paper. You could also cut out the middle with a small pair of scissors but, keep in mind that you may get some ruff edges on the inside of your flower. After I finished all of my die cutting I took my stamp once more and stamped my flower out a couple times more on a white piece of paper. This will allow my to take all of my die cut pieces and place them together by gluing them down on the white sheet.I used Ranger Multi Medium Matte to glue all of my pieces together since its what I had on hand; you could also use a glue stick as well to glue down your pieces. Once I finished gluing all my pieces down I took my coordinating dies once more and die cut the paper pieced flowers.

Then, once all my images where cut out I used the flower die cut to cut out a white heavy weight cardstock without stamping on it. I used a 110lbs cardstock by Recollections I bought at Micheal's. You could use which ever heavy weight cardstock you have. Once all of that was finished I heated my glue gun and grabbed a paper clip to begin assembling my pieces. I then took one of the white pieces of paper I die cut with no stamping on it and placed it down on my work surface; then I took a paperclip and laid it om top of my white paper making sure I had it the right way. Then I used the hot glue gun and placed some glue on to the paper and paperclip; then I laid down one of the flowers I had paper pieced on top. You want to be careful when you do this so you won't burn yourself. I usually pick up the paperclip to make sure I aligned it correctly which is usually when I burn myself since some of the hot glue oozes out. So please do be careful if you decide to pick it up to align it. Let the glue cool off and presto you have a super cute paperclip for you planner, book, or anything you need papercliping.

You could also take this a step further by making your paperclip into a shaker paperclip. When you cut out the middle instead of covering it you could make the center a shaker by adding some adhesive to the bottom and adding a clear piece of acetate. To make it a shaker you cause a piece of craft foam, align the flower die cut and the circle die cut. Once you have them aligned tape it down to your craft foam trying not to move it and run it through your die cutting machine. If you don't have any craft foam you could also die cut several pieces of cardstock; about 4 to 6 pieces. After you cut out all you pieces glue them together to get a raised piece; this allows you to create a small raised area to put in your shaker pieces. At this point you should have a raised piece with a circle in the middle. Then, die cut one more flower piece out of cardstock without the circle in the middle to use as a backing for your shaker piece. Next, cut out a slightly larger piece of paper than the opening of the raised piece you created; you could also use a slightly larger circle die than the one you used for the center and glue it to the back of your raised piece. I like doing this because I feel its a bit easier to add the paper clip onto the piece. Once you have all your pieces ready you are ready to attach our paperclip. I attached mine the same way as before; since we glued down that piece of paper to the back of the raised piece. For a shaker paperclip I use a bit less hot glue since it'll thicken the back.

Now its time for the fun part, adding your shaker pieces; for this you could use any shaped confetti or other tiny embellishments to fill you shaker piece. Before adding in my shaker pieces I use an anti-static tool to make sure I remove any adhesive residue or any static that could prevent my pieces from shaking around. Once you finish using your anti-static tool add in your shaker elements. Then, to finish off your paperclip take the flower with the acetate add some adhesive and place it on the top of you shaker piece and TAAA-DAAAA!!!! you have yourself a super fun and cute shaker paperclip.

Another way you could make one of these fun paperclips is by stamping out your image on different patterned paper; as I did on this paperclip (image above). I stamped out my flower image on three separate sheets of patterned paper and also on a white sheet of paper. I then cut out the pedals from the patterned paper and glued them down onto the white paper. Then I die cut a circle and glued that down. I also die cut a white flower once more for the back and put my paperclip together just liker I put the other ones together.

Thank you for spending some time here with me today; I hope you find this post helpful and try it out. If you do make some paper pieced paperclips please share them with me I would love to see all of your wonderful creations. Don't forget to subscribe to be alerted when new posts are up.
