Watercolor under Embossing

Updated: Jan 21, 2019

Hello. Today I am going to show you a super fun and unique way to make a colorful card. This technique has been around for a while but I really enjoy using it and love the results you get when using it.

I began this card by cutting a9 x 12 piece of Canson watercolor paper to 5 1/2- 4 1/4 since this is the size of a basic card.I then used some Artistloft watercolor markers, you could use tombow markers, zig clean real color markers, or any marker that disperses once you add water. Once I chose the colors that I wanted to use I scribbled three little blobs on the corners of the paper. In this case I used two different colors; a light and dark color.

First I scribbled the lighter color on first and then added a little of the darker color on top of the lighter one.Once I was satisfied with the size of the blobs I misted the paper with a spray bottle (I got mine a t the Dollar store) and let the colors "run" and spread around. I then used my heat gun to dry the paper, which will move the color around a bit more. You can dab off the water puddles that form with a towel if you don't want there to be color in s certain spot or to much in a certain area. Once it was dry I used the Altenew "frosted garden" stamp set.

I then took some of the floral images from the stamp set and laid them faced down and arranged them how I wanted to stamp them. Once I was happy with the arrangement of the stamps I picked them up with the We R Memory Keepers "Precision press advanced and put it a side. Next, I took the paper and my anti-static powder tool and rubbed it across the paper. Then I took the arrangement of stamps and some versa mark clear ink and inked up the stamps. For this part you want to make sure that you ink up your stamps very good depending on the quality and how fast your paper absorbs the ink; this is so that you have time to put on the embossing powder and heat it. I used clear embossing powder, once I had heated and melted the powder I then added an other layer of embossing powder while the first layer was still a bit sticky; I did this to make sure I had the areas well covered. Once the embossing powder cooled off I then took some black soot distress ink and a blender tool and added black all over then paper and embossing powder. The embossing powder will act kind of like a mask for those floral images I stamped and heat embossed. I went light handed on the paper because I wanted some of the watercolor to show threw the ink. I took a clean dry towel and gently went over the areas where there was embossing powder and removed the as much black ink as I could from the embossing powder.

To finish off this card I folded an 8 1/2 x 11 paper in half to 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 and cut it in the middle to create my card base which is 5 1/2 by 4 1/4; as always I am using the recollections 110lb card stock from Micheal's. I then took a black piece of paper and cut it down to 5 1/4 x 4 1/8 and adhered it with my tape runner. I also cut down the watercolor piece I had created to 5 1/8 x 4 and attached some craft foam to the back of it and attached it to the card base; this is to create a little dimension on the card. Next I stamped the sentiment "Get well soon" and "Sending you sunshine and laughter" onto black cardstock with versa mark clear ink and added white embossing powder and heat it. I cut the sentiment to a strip and added it towards the bottom of the card. At this point I was finished with the card but I felt like something was missing so I took some embellishments out and began playing around with where on the card they could go. Once I was happy with how the card looked with the jewels I adhered them with Sticky Thumb liquid adhesive.
